Unbranded Exhibition

Well the big day came - and we did our thing.  Here’s my summary;

First of all I had to do the classic ‘Yes Men’ costume change in the gents - and like a reverse Mr Ben I emerged wearing a suit and tie and renamed ‘Andy Credit’ - a representative of Consumer Direct.

My exhibit was a sort of info point for Consumer Direct - with pastiche posters extolling the virtues of consumer spending. I reversioned the WW1 propaganda poster of Lord Kitchener and mashed it up with Gordon Brown and the chip and pin logo to create a call to all consumers to spend to rescue the ailing economy - the literal “Your country needs you”. Alongside other such promotional posters there was a terminal to surf the ‘identity corrected’ Consumer Direct website so visitors could pick up crucial consumer advice on maximising credit, the feelgood factor of purchasing and avoiding ‘consumer stagnation’ by replacing obselete items.

The exhibition went well - although it was lacking the usual business the Lewinsky Building usually has, I think this was mainly due to the preceeding Bank oliday and the ridiculous amount of building works in the grounds which cut off easy pedestrian access to the building from the main campus and so stifled the usual passers by. Those that did show up seemed interested and involved in the various works, I had some good conversations with visitors as ‘Andy Credit’ and also to those that knew me already they were interested in the content of the site and the artwork.

The other contributors all had keen interest, with visitors parttaking in the interactive pieces and sampling the open source beverages (I even managed to get a decent snowboarding jacket from the Freetrade Boutique!). My family showed up for a look around and my little girl got stuck in - Adbusting at the age of 15 months!

All that is left to do now is edit the video documentation and update the site with our experiences of the exhibition.

Onion News Network

Following our work on subverting content - and my recently identitiy corrected Consumer Direct Website I was chuffed to find the Onion News Network. I’m pretty sure I have seen some of their stuff before but the content seems much more pertinent now - especially the videos on outsourcing and sweatshops.
It reminded be of ‘Brass Eye‘, but as it’s online it allows it to be a bit more uncensored - which adds to the ludicrous nature of some of the panel discussions and content.

Consumer Direct (reversioned)

I have finally finished the 23 page reversioned Consumer Direct site - all created using CSS and photoshop. I am very happy with the content as it looks believable at first and then becomes more and more outrageous and ludicrous as you delve further into the text. In a side by side comparison to the original site it is a pretty close approximation and contains enough (mis)information to be a convincing parody.

The site is here and here’s some example screenshots;

Reamweaver? Ah well… let’s try good old CSS

As I mentioned previously my attempts to re-version the Consumer Direct website using Reamweaver were scuppered by certain presets on my webhosting - but once I began experimenting with the content I knew I had to do it. Therefore I had to revert to using Grab to capture screenshots and edited them into backgrounds in Photoshop.

Now I have to try to convincingly recreate the navigation, layout and styling with CSS to make my funhouse mirror ‘look and feel’ like the real thing.

Apathist….or consumer advice?

I have been re-reading my work so far on the Apathist Cookbook and it’s not really hitting the right note.
The visual stuff I have been working on looks ok though…

Consumer Direct

Consumer Direct

So I have been looking into the Yes men’s “Reamweaver” which allows you to funhouse mirror a corporate website - unfortunately the passthru() function in php is disabled by my webhost (for security) so I am unable to set up a fake site. I planned to use the govt’s consumer direct website and place misinformation and apathist aphorisms on it.

I think I will take that idea into print though if I cant do it online - and continue with the apathist idea but maybe as an “identity corrected” govt. leaflet. Similar in premis to the fake NY Times which the Yes Men distributed to commuters. So In conjunction with my posters regarding pro-consumerism I will also create a Consumer Direct leaflet which covers much of the apathist aims.

Unbranded logo reworked

Combination unbranded logo

Combination unbranded logo

I have replaced the “un” with the sticker logo idea so we can take that through to use as a sticker still and remain within the same branded identity and I have also added a masking tape nod to the uni logo. I also changed the N for a nike letter and the D for an adidas letter to utilise stronger brand fonts.

This works as a compromise between the two popular logo choices and should hopefully be the finalised choice. We shall see…

Also Becky, Graeme and I did another walkaround in the exhibition space and we have a pretty good idea of the layout - just need to see what everyone requires space wise to ensure it will all fit in together.
